but soft, what burrito through yonder window breaks..

Today, folks, I am going to talk about the never ending joys of being in love. Since this whole section is about love (at least I think it is, something along those lines) I figured I’d stick to the topic and avoid being original at all costs. There was even a suggestion to write an extended metaphor describing how love can be like a race car. I don’t really see how love and Nascar work into each other, but there you have it. I suppose you might fall in love with driving like a maniac (I know I am. P.s. I drive a silver Ford Fusion, watch out). Anyway, I’ll try to stick to the topic. I got really excited when the topic said we could be humourous, so prepare yourselves.
It was a windy day in Valencia and I had just gotten done with a dance competition. A friend had driven me and her family wanted to stop and get something to eat (this friend was on my team; mind you, her family didn’t drive me out there just for fun). Little did I know my greatest joy was about to be revealed to me. They decided to stop at Chipotle, the Mexican Subway as I call it. We walked in and I thought to myself, “self, this is like the Mexican Subway.” I try to keep it simple when someone else is paying for me, so I decided to go with a regular hum drum burrito with just beans (and a tortilla). But then, I looked to my right and discovered a great big pile of steaming spicy chicken. Shyly, I asked for the chicken. And again I was astounded when there was salsa to be had, and not just any regular salsa, but salsa that wasn’t all chunky and full of onions. I was already excited, and once I took my first bite it felt as if I was falling in love all over again. This burrito was like a first kiss (not the crappy first kiss that no one admits to, the good one that you lie about). Never had I tasted anything so delicious and mind boggling; so many joys wrapped up in this little burrito. I thought that Del Taco had great burritos, but this one burrito put them all to shame and back. Sadly, there is an unfortunate end to this happy tale of mine. My love affair with Chipotle has just ended in a most indecent way. One day, I tried the hot salsa because I was feeling saucy. A half hour later, my initiation into being old hit me; heartburn. Naturally, I went back to my old medium salsa ways, but I was shocked to discover that it just wasn’t spicy enough anymore, and they had changed it! Much to my displeasure, I took a big bite and found a giant piece of a nasty onion in my burrito. I still love the old place, but I will never feel the love I once had for it.
Voila, the end.

  1. This is definitely leading to humor. I have never tried Chipotle. And I am Mexican, which means I love onion. However, we are two different persons with different taste. I would have love to try a burrito from there. I guess now that you intended to extending the source of how good it is, then I should try it. It really is upsetting when the an ingredient on your special food changes. I used to have a great appetite when I would step into a dominos pizza, but ever since there new recipe arrived, the pizza turn to a terrible sensation.
I agree with you on the displeasure of loving something and then suddenly being disappointed. It is just like love with a natural significant other. You go through the entire lovely bubbly situation, where you think everything is perfect, even the first kiss. Then you get to the part of the relationship where we set clear and set foot on earth. You realize that perfection was never there, it was just a new animation to your life. It’s funny how we can compare the love of a burrito to the love of a significant other, but reality is clear. This means, we are the blind ones at times. However, I am not against love, so don’t get me wrong. I just feel that we should all know and realize that everyone goes through it, and we give a false impression, or lie about it just like we would lie about the crappy first kiss.

  2. This makes me laugh. I too love Chipotle and my first experience was bliss as well. My x-boss was actually the one to make me go. I used to work for this fast food company that makes orange chicken and shall remain nameless. My boss suggested, in order to spy on the competition, that I should eat at this place and observe why it's profits were through the roof and growing exponentially. My first thought was "How the hell are Chinese food and Mexican food competitors?" But I decided not to pass up an opportunity for a free dinner. I walk in, got my burrito, tripped and fell in love. Not only was the food amazing with incredibly generous portions, their corn salsa was like little bits of joy with lime sauce. I took some dorky notes on ambiance and customer service so I would have something to give to my boss along with the receipt but really, all I could think about was how good it was. To this day it's my favorite burrito spot in the world. Sit down restaurants don't even compare to it. Steve Ells, the founder, is a rich man and rightly so. One of the few rich people I would take my hat off to and wish him well because that man is a visionary. Like you, I used to like Del Taco and Taco Bell too but now, when I'm forced to eat at those places I can't help but pity their tiny pithy entrees and dream of better. As usual, your blog is one of my favorites. Great job.

  3. First off I think Chipotle and Del Taco are two of the best fast foods restaurants ever. I am the only one out of my friends and anyone I know who likes Chipotle. I always have to go there by myself because no one else likes it so I hardly even go. But it’s good to hear someone else who likes it as much as me. I’ve never heard anyone describe the burritos as you did but you made them sound even more delicious. Sucks that the onion had to ruin your initial love you had for it but just check out your burrito next time before you eat it. I always check my food before I eat, especially burritos. I had a very bad experience once with a burrito that kept me from eating burritos for over a year. I got rid of my phobia and I am slowly moving back in the eating burritos game. A few more months I might be fully back to eating them comfortably. But good job at making a whole blog about a burrito and your amazing love for it.

  4. Ah Chipotle. I have such a love/hate relationship with that place! One of my best friends just loves it and even though I protested going there for so long I finally gave in and was really happy that I did. It is so yummy! I love that it is like a “Mexican subway” and that you can get whatever ever you want and leave out the things you don’t, plus that way you can get the same thing but still change it up a little if you feel like it. The only problem is that I always feel so full when I leave there! I usually just get a rice bowl with chicken, salsa, sour cream cheese lettuce and of course guacamole and maybe if I’m feeling a little extra hungry I’ll throw in some chips and that totally fills me up. I can’t even imagine what it would be like if I wrapped it all up in a big tortilla, I think my stomach would explode! It’s too bad that they changed the salsa that you liked. It is always so disappointing when a place changes something that you like. I have that problem all the time! For a while it seemed like every time I went to Chili’s they had changed their menu and the only thing missing was what I had picked as my favorite! You did a really good job writing this blog, it was pretty entertaining!
